Manager Effectiveness

"L&D function" includes all of the formal Learning & Development (L&D) functions or teams that are responsible for driving and managing the learning and development of employees across most or all of your organization, including employees in your business unit or division.

"L&D staff" refers to individuals who are formally part of the L&D function.

"Direct manager" refers to the individual responsible for reporting your performance and changes in your employment status.

"Formal learning" includes all the activities, tools, and resources that are intentionally designed to help employees learn skills, processes, and concepts that are professionally relevant for them. 

"Informal learning" includes all the unstructured activities that employees participate in to learn skills, processes, and concepts that are professionally relevant for them. These activities include learning that occurs while employees complete job tasks or interact with their manager or coworkers.

"Learning experience" refers to an activity that contributes to the learning and development of skills needed to perform your work duties. The learning experience may include some combination of either formal learning or informal learning.

"Learning content" refers to materials (such as printed documents, online resources, videos, etc.) used to help employees learn skills, processes, and concepts that are professionally relevant for them. These materials may be used in either formal or informal learning experiences.  

"Coaching" refers to an activity in which one individual enables another individual to develop skills, attitudes, or behaviors to help them maximize their performance in their roles. 

"Mentoring" refers to an ongoing activity in which a relatively more senior individual helps a more junior employee set and achieve personal- and career-related development goals. 

"Development" refers to any activity in which an employee is enabled to meet learning objectives or requirements that are meant to increase their effectiveness in and skill preparedness for current or future roles.
